Can a Probiotic Heal Your Gut From Alcohol Use?
The answer isn’t always straightforward!
One of the topics I frequently discuss is the impact of alcohol on gut health, which can lead to a range of health issues—from poor digestion and constipation to skin problems, acne, and even headaches.
A common question I receive is, “Will a probiotic help repair my gut health?”
To determine this, I often run a stool analysis for my clients. This test provides insights into the health of their gut microbiome, allowing me to tailor supplement recommendations to effectively manage their symptoms and support their health goals.
Many clients come to me already taking probiotics, but they often aren’t sure if they’re having any effect. Some have taken probiotics for years without seeing any growth in beneficial bacteria.
This is where personalized nutrition becomes essential. Every body is unique, and what works for one person may not work for another. If you've tried a probiotic and experienced side effects like increased bloating or digestive discomfort, it might be time to explore a different approach to rebalancing your gut microbiome.
One of my favorite strategies for improving gut health is to increase dietary fiber intake by incorporating more plant foods—such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains—into your diet. Aim for at least 25 grams of fiber daily!
Prebiotic fibers, a specific type of fiber that feeds healthy gut microbes, can be found in foods like artichokes, asparagus, oats, leeks, onions, sunchokes, bananas, and plantains. Be sure to include a source of prebiotic fiber in your daily meals.
If you've tried a probiotic supplement without seeing results, don’t get discouraged. This is a signal to dig deeper into your gut health!
That’s why I created the Functional Sobriety Academy — to help you navigate your health journey, learn more about your gut microbiome, and discover the foods and supplements that align with your health goals.
